Classic Turkey Club Sandwich

Nothing is more classic and simply delicious than a Classic Turkey Club Sandwich. It is one of the iconic sandwiches found on almost every restaurant menu in California. It is one of my all-time favorite sandwiches, and if you’ve never made one at home, I’m here to help you. I recommend using the best ingredients and a nice, sturdy white bread, and you will be a Turkey Club Sandwich master in no time flat!

What is a Turkey Club Sandwich?

In the sandwich world, there are several classics, this being one of them. It is believed that the “Club” sandwich we know today originated in New York. There are two places of supposed origin: The Union Club of New York City and the Saratoga Club in Saratoga Springs, NY. It appears in menus as early as 1899, which is impressive. The early version of the sandwich only used two pieces of bread with poultry and ham and served warm. Today’s version features an extra slice of bread in the middle, separating the produce from the meats. A “multi-decker” sandwich, if you will. There is no hard-pressed rule on what is on each side of the bread, but we agree that the combo is scrumptious. It’s just not a club sandwich without the third piece of bread!

The classic Turkey Club consists of roasted turkey, cooked thin-sliced bacon, crispy lettuce, ripe tomato, and mayonnaise. Good, firm white bread, toasted, is used, and of course, the long toothpick keeps all the deliciousness together. Some variations include sliced cheese, but I keep mine traditional. From there, you can customize it to make it your own.

Ingredients

The ingredients below make one sandwich. However, you can use the multiplier on the recipe card to make up to three sandwiches.

  • 4-5 slices of thin-sliced bacon, cooked crispy.
  • Three slices of good, firm white bread. Do not use sourdough or other bread with air pockets; use hearty country white bread.
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • 2-4 tablespoons of good-quality mayonnaise
  • 3 ounces of sliced turkey. Leftover Thanksgiving turkey is the best for this! A good-quality deli-sliced roast turkey is a second option.
  • 2 leaves of butter lettuce, washed and thoroughly dried. Torn close to the size of the bread.
  • 2-3 thick slices of ripe tomato
  • salt and pepper

How to build a Turkey Club Sandwich

  • Start by cooking the bacon until crispy. Once the bacon is crisp-cooked, place it on paper towels so the paper towels absorb the excess bacon grease. You can break the strips in half when the bacon has cooled off if necessary.
  • Preheat the skillet over medium heat. Spread some butter onto a slice of bread, add it to a hot cast iron pan, and toast until golden brown. The bread should be warm and golden when done. Repeat for all three slices.
  • Next, spread a generous amount of mayonnaise on a slice of toasted bread.
  • Layer butter lettuce leaves first, next tomato slices.
  • Sprinkle salt and pepper onto the tomato slices.
  • Spread mayonnaise on the second slice of bread and place it on the mayonnaise side towards the tomato slices.
  • Add mayonnaise to another side of toasted bread.
  • Layer in layers of turkey and, finally, the cooked bacon slices. The bacon should fit within the size of the slice of bread.
  • Add more mayonnaise to the last piece of toasted bread to finish the sandwich.
  • Add sandwich picks to four corners of the sandwich (about 1 inch in) and cut into quarters.

Serve with crispy french fries or potato chips.

Variations on the Turkey Club Sandwich

I don’t stray from the classic very much, but when I do, it’s for avocado. Below are some variations and additions to customize your Classic Turkey Club Sandwich.

  • Avocado – it goes perfectly with this sandwich
  • Pickles – yes, some love pickles in their Club Sandwich
  • Ham – Add thinly sliced ham alongside the sliced turkey
  • Roast chicken – instead of roast turkey
  • Mustard – yellow, dijon, or whole grain. (Dijon is my fave)
  • Swiss cheese – sliced cheese is often served in this sando!
  • Lobster – for an ultra decadent option, lobster meat instead of turkey or ham.
  • Crab – another incredible and delicious option

Best side dishes

This Classic Turkey Club Sandwich works best with classic side dishes: crispy French fries, potato chips, or potato salad. All of these are perfect sides and the easiest!
