What is Lavender Lemonade?

This crisp and refreshing Lavender Lemonade with homemade Lavender Syrup is prepared in the traditional way that you make lemonade. Freshly squeezed ripe lemons, and typically you would use a simple syrup which I do in this recipe. But when I make the simple syrup, I infuse dried Lavender flower buds into the simple syrup and it creates a herbal, floral, and aromatic syrup that blends into the lemonade beautifully. The bonus is that the Lavender syrup can be used for cocktails or Latte’s. Yes, you read that right, Latte’s. 😉

What does lavender lemonade taste like?

Many people ask what does this Lavender Lemonade taste like? It’s sweet and lemony but with a floral aroma and an herbal and floral taste. Don’t let “herbal” scare you, there is a slight flavor of, well, lavender. But it’s on the sweeter side versus having a bite or bitterness. The blend of the lemon and lavender is unexpected but true soul mates, I promise! If you love those lemony herbal flavors, be sure to try my Rosemary Lemon Water, it’s a fan favorite!

How to make Lavender Simple Syrup

You are probably thinking, where am I going to find dried Lavender flower buds? Here in Los Angeles, they are available at Ralphs supermarket which is part of Kroger. I buy them in the dried spice aisle and they are dried Lavender flower buds. I need to clarify that these are meant for culinary use. If you do a web search, make sure to include culinary, dried lavender flowers in your search. Also, ensure the dried Lavender is fresh and fragrant. Dried herbs and spices don’t last forever, so make sure what you use is fresh, so you get the fullest flavor potential.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of white, granulated sugar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of dried, Lavender flowers

Using a small saucepan, add 1 cup of water, 1 cup of sugar, and the dried Lavender flowers. Bring the mixture to a slow simmer. Simmer for about 1-2 minutes until all the sugar is completely dissolved. Turn the heat off and allow the syrup to steep for 15 minutes.

Once the syrup has steeped, drain through a fine mesh strainer to remove the Lavender flowers. Now the syrup is ready to use in the lemonade.

How to make this delicious Lemonade

  • 1 1/4 cups of Lavender simple syrup

Frequently asked questions

Can I substitute honey for sugar?

You could, however, you would have to play with the ratios and ensure the honey is liquified before it’s added to the lemonade. Also, make sure the honey is a neutral taste so it doesn’t compete with the flavor of the lavender.

Can I use fresh Lavender flowers?

Yes, the flavor is not as intense as dried though. You need 1 tablespoon of fresh in the simple syrup recipe rather than 1 1/2 teaspoons of dried.

Can I use store-bought Lavender syrup?

Yes, add a little at a time until the flavor suits you. It’s hard to compare store-bought versus homemade Lavender simple syrup for quantity and equivalent flavor.

How long with the Lavender simple syrup last?

Homemade Lavender simple syrup will last up to 1 month in the refrigerator.
